The planets are obviously in alignment for Chris Chun. I first came across him and his work when we did a profile on him in Real Living a while back. At that time I wasn't featuring many artists on my blog - perhaps for fear they wouldn't respond to my questions! (I had some funny ideas about the aloofness of artists). But recently I received an invite to the latest exhibition at the Washhouse Gallery in Sydney's Rozelle and there Chris was again! I just had to feature him on Daily Imprint. I love his use of colour and find his paintings very calming.
Which five words best describe you? Fun, adventurous, insightful, talented, optimistic.
What was your first job and what path have you taken since then? My first job was working as a waiter in my Dad's Chinese Restaurant but it was more about earning money rather than a career choice! Saying that, growing up with parents who are both gourmands has been a very positive influence not only on my stomach and soul but my work as well. My first exhibition was all about food and the memories associated with them like the smell of vanilla. Instantly I think back to Mum making butterfly cakes! There have also been several times in my career where I have worked in the kitchen when I couldn't get any design work both here in Australia and overseas.
What’s your proudest achievement? I think it is having my first exhibition of paintings which was a sell out show. It was such a huge personal challenge for me (in terms of having absolute free reign to create rather than design to a specific brief) and to paint from the heart. As any artist will tell you, it is so nerve wracking putting 'yourself' up there on the walls - I really felt naked! Everyone is coming to see your work and nothing else. Thank God most people liked what they saw!
What’s been your best decision? Going out on my own and being able to do what I want to do in terms of work.
What was the starting point for this exhibition? My travels to Asia and to just appreciate and celebrate the simple things in life such as the everyday beauty of nature.
Who inspires you? Am inspired by many different things depending on the day and how I feel. Could be a movie, place I've visited, Oprah (I have lunch with her everyday!), flower, plate of food, story, magazine....in other words, anything and everything.
What are you passionate about? My artwork, food, trapeze class, family & friends, tennis, travel, yoga in no particular order.
What’s the best lesson you’ve learnt? Never, ever be afraid to try new things and get out of your comfort zone. You may be very surprised at what you can do.
Which person, living or dead, would you most like to meet? Michelangelo - he was a genius!
What dream do you still want to fulfil? I would love to create a range of limited edition products working with different artisans all over the world which will support their community.
What are you reading? Eckhart Tolle's A New Earth and Martha Stewart Living Magazine - there's 16 cupcake recipes I want to try!
