photographer robyn lea

Robyn Lea's life as a photographer started in Milan. While she was born and raised in country Victoria, she moved to Italy and began assisting there at age 18. It is a country that has maintained close ties with. Through her photography she has worked with the likes of Gucci and Bulgari. And Robyn is about to launch The Milan Book - a project she completed with Bec Cole (read her interview here). Over the past five years Robyn has also been directing TV commercials, as well as contributing to est magazine. She now lives in New York, where she will hold her 10th solo exhibition of photography next year.

Which five words best describe you? Hardworking, sensitive, loyal, curious and silly.

How did you get your career start and what path have you taken since? I started my career as an assistant in the photography studios of Milan in Italy, then eventually started shooting there myself. I now live in New York and shoot almost everywhere, and in the last six years have also started directing TV commercials and writing for magazines about artists in New York.

What’s the best lesson you’ve learnt along the way? There is only one sun. That is, never use more than one light.

What’s your proudest career achievement? Writing and shooting my coffee table book The Milan Book to be launched next year.

What’s been your best decision? To nurture my own creative projects even with sometimes major obstacles. Next year I will launch my 10th solo exhibition and it is the work that I have produced for many of my past shows that has fed my heart and ensured my happiness.

Who inspires you? Antonio Marras, Sara Hussen Benn, Medardo Rosso, Camille Claudel, Rossana Orlandi, Katharine Graham, Kathe Kollwitz, Gisella Borioli.

What are you passionate about? Creating constantly.

Which person, living or dead, would you most like to meet? Eleonora Duse

What dream do you still want to fulfil? My next major project in New York (top secret but can tell you in a year from now!).

What are you reading? Just kids by Patti Smith.
